CALL ME ISHMAEL.  A crisp beginning to a rollicking sea fantasy. Herman Melville wasn’t recognised in his life time. It took time for the public to realise the impact of that story. There’s hope for us yet!

One of my favourite writers is C S Lewis, the Oxford Don (later Cambridge Philosophy) who wrote children’s stories! Starting the pivotal chapter in the Narnia allegory, he describes a quite scene. I empathise with him in his love of the natural environment using it to set the mood. (The mood changes a lot later).

The opening sentence sets the tone and snatches the attention.
